1
QSEN Foundations and Graduate-Level Purpose
Explain the background, purpose, and graduate-level focus of AACN QSEN competencies, including how the framework builds on knowledge, skills, and attitudes for safe, effective, patient-centered care.
- 2 The Six QSEN Competencies: Definitions and Organizing Framework Identify the six QSEN competency domains and define core concepts such as quality improvement and safety as the organizing structure for graduate-level learning.
- 3 Patient-Centered Care and Teamwork/Collaboration Analyze graduate-level expectations for engaging patients and families as partners in care and for practicing interprofessional collaboration, communication, cultural humility, and team-based care.
- 4 Evidence-Based Practice and Informatics for Quality and Safety Examine competencies related to using current evidence, addressing evidence gaps, translating research into practice, and applying information systems, clinical decision support, and regulatory requirements to improve care.
- 5 Graduate-Level KSAs Across Competencies Distinguish and sequence the knowledge, skills, and attitudes expected at the graduate level across QSEN domains, including leadership, stakeholder engagement, and system-level thinking.
- 6 Quality Improvement Methods and Change Management Apply AACN QSEN expectations for using data, benchmarks, context analysis, change management, and small tests of change such as Plan-Do-Study-Act to improve patient and system outcomes.
- 7 Safety Culture, Error Response, and High Reliability Interpret graduate-level safety competencies related to hazard anticipation, reporting errors and near misses, evidence-based responses to errors, root cause analysis, failure mode effects analysis, standardization, and high reliability.
- 8 Application to Clinical Quality and Safety Issues Synthesize the AACN graduate-level QSEN competencies to analyze clinical quality and safety issues through patient-centered, team-based, evidence-informed, data-driven, and system-focused approaches.
