Template purpose and the strategic planning sequence

From: PepsiCo Strategic Planning: SPACE, Grand Strategy, and QSP Matrices

The PepsiCo Strategic Planning: SPACE, Grand Strategy, and QSP Matrices workbook helps analyze and present strategies for the next three years. It does not research or prioritize information for the user; instead, the user supplies internal and external factors, weights, company names, ratings, and other assumptions, while the template performs calculations and formats results.

Planning sequence

  1. Enter research inputs: add internal and external strategic factors and financial assumptions.
  2. Assign weights and ratings: give each factor a weight whose total equals 1.00, then rate the focal company and competitors.
  3. Calculate weighted results: formulas multiply weights by ratings, such as 0.18 × 3 = 0.54.
  4. Develop alternatives: organize WO, WT, and other strategy options.
  5. Compare alternatives: the QSPM carries factors and weights from Part I and totals competing strategies.
  6. Project consequences: later sheets produce projected statements, retained earnings, EPS, and ratios across the three-year horizon.

User inputs versus automated results

User-entered material includes strategic factors, weights, company and competitor names, ratings, perceptual-map dimensions, forecasts, and selected financial values. Template-generated results include weighted scores, links between worksheets, QSPM totals, EPS, goodwill, retained earnings, projected balances, and ratios.

Key takeaway: this is a three-year strategic planning and presentation tool. The user supplies evidence and judgment; the workbook organizes it and performs the matrix and financial calculations.
