Lean Management Case Studies: Medtronic PDCA Supplier Development and Phase 2 Golden Triangle
This study pack contains two Lean Enterprise Institute case studies on applying lean management in medical device manufacturing. The first, Using Plan-Do-Check-Act as a Strategy and Tactic for Helping Suppliers Improve, examines how Medtronic Neuromodulation uses the PDCA cycle not only for shop-floor problem solving but as a strategic framework for selecting and developing key suppliers. It covers supplier quality issues, continuous improvement partnerships, and results from Medtronic’s lean journey. The second case study, Sustain Your Lean Business System With A Golden Triangle by Chet Marchwinski, follows Phase 2 Medical Manufacturing as it responds to competitive pressure by intensifying its lean transformation. Students learn how visual management, training, culture, and structural changes interact to sustain lean gains when facing global competition and dual production facilities.
