IT 503: Computer Organization — Elements, Memory Hierarchy and Multiprocessing
Lecture slides for IT 503 drawn from Stallings, Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles. Chapter 1 covers computer-system basics (processor, memory, I/O, bus), instruction fetch/execute, interrupts, the memory hierarchy and cache, programmed I/O vs interrupt-driven I/O vs DMA, symmetric multiprocessors and multicore chips. Chapter 2 is an OS overview: services and interfaces (ISA, ABI, API), the OS as resource manager, serial and batch systems, multiprogramming and time-sharing (including CTSS), and the process and memory-management abstractions.
