IELTS Speaking Study Plan: Foundations to Task Practice
Build my IELTS Speaking skills with a clear study plan covering fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and common speaking tasks.
Lessons in this plan
- 1 Understand the IELTS Speaking test structure and scoring demands Identify the three speaking parts, what each part asks you to do, and the core performance demands: answering personal questions, speaking for 1–2 minutes after 1 minute of preparation, and discussing opinions and abstract ideas with reasons and examples.
- 2 Build fluency for Part 1 personal and everyday topics Practice giving clear, extended answers about familiar topics such as home, work or study, free time, daily routine, birthdays, books, country, flowers, humour, movies, outdoor activities, travel, and trees without stopping after one sentence.
- 3 Develop vocabulary by topic and by function Organize useful speaking vocabulary into common IELTS topic areas and response functions, including describing habits, places, preferences, cultural practices, benefits, changes over time, and personal experiences.
- 4 Strengthen grammatical range in spoken answers Practice using grammar needed for speaking tasks accurately: present simple for routines, past forms for childhood and experiences, future forms for plans, comparatives for preferences, and reason-result structures to justify opinions.
- 5 Improve pronunciation through clear delivery and response pacing Train yourself to speak audibly and steadily in complete thought groups while maintaining understandable pronunciation during short answers and longer turns.
- 6 Master Part 2: plan and deliver the long turn Use the 1-minute preparation time to note key points, then speak for 1–2 minutes on cue-card topics such as an advertisement, a challenging thing you did, or a person you know, covering each bullet clearly.
- 7 Handle Part 3 discussion questions with opinions and analysis Answer follow-up discussion questions by expressing an opinion, justifying it, comparing perspectives, and supporting ideas with examples on topics such as advertising and teamwork.
- 8 Run timed speaking practice with feedback logs Complete full Parts 1–3 speaking practice under test-like timing, then record recurring problems in fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and task handling in an error log for targeted revision.
